Water Heater Trends
Technology advancements continue to push efficiency, ease of installation, water conservation, price, and now integration into the smart-home. Water Heaters today don’t just store heat & store water.
The latest innovations include better technology integrating your hot water source into the smart-home. Units have built-in detection and can send notifications when performance falls below optimal levels.
Tankless Water Heaters
Tankless Water Heaters provide on-demand hot water as it flows through the device making these units more energy efficient than traditional storage tank units.
In addition, Tankless heaters can be installed at the point-of-use (POU) or mulitple POUs throughout your household. This decentralizes your hot water sources and allows peace amongst family members.

FAQs
Our best guess is you have a traditional storage tank water heater. These units have been around for a 100 years and simply heat & store hot water. Your limited only to the size of tank you have installed.
A tankless unit will be more efficient because it only produces hot water when it is needed. The challenge (still as of 2019), is the one-time cost & installation could be 2-3 times more expensive based on your requirements. Call Bob Tolsma Plumbing at (616) 836-1197 to discuss options.
A Storage Tank Water Heater will typically last about 8 to 12 years (on average).
In Michigan, we’ll assume your source of fuel will be natural gas or liquid propane.
30-Gallon Tank – Family of 1 to 2 people
40-Gallon Tank – Family of 2 to 4 people
50-Gallon Tank – Family of 5 or more

Water Heater Replacement
As with anything, there’s come a time when it’s better to replace the unit.
The first tell tale sign you need to replace your unit is “water pooling underneath”. If your unit has slow drip underneath, your steel tank has rusted through and it’s time to replace the unit. Also, if your unit is over 10 years old, there’s a good chance you’ll be better off replacing the unit versus repairing it.
